Spring Fashion 2011

Spring Fashion 2011   Fashion this spring is as much of a contradiction as the weather in Aspen – pale, unconstructed neutrals, longer lengths and wide-leg pants vs. bright, primary colors, the biker look and skinny jeans.  Doesn’t that remind you of April and May here in Aspen?

Michael lives in Aspen…for Just One Night

Yours truly made an appearance on Saturday night at the sold out Who’s Bad show at the Belly Up club in Aspen, Colorado…dressed as her favorite pop icon….the late, great Michael Jackson.  Having adapted many of his iconic dance moves throughout the years, after studying his innovative and classic videos, I have always felt a close affinity for his professionalism and star quality.  Dressed in my black sequin jacket, skinny Dolce Gabbana satin pants, black fedora, sparkly socks and black velvet Ralph Lauren loafers, I headed over to the best club for entertainment in Aspen to see the tribute band from Las Vegas, who had just played in Denver the night before, to actually see two Michael Jackson impersonators who alternated singing and dancing many of his hits along with a great back-up band.  They were terrific and held the audience in rapture for almost two hours.  What surprised me most pleasantly was when I walked in, everyone greeted me as Michael and wanted to take photos with me!  What a kick!  Going into my best MJ voice, I whispered, “It’s good to be back, even for just one night….and remember, it’s all about the love.”  Yes, Michael, the love is what we remember….and the talent.  We miss you.

J.C.Penney Surprise Find

Last week, I did something I’ve never done before.  After watching a holiday fashion segment on Good Morning America, I ordered a little black sequin dress from the GMA website, which directed me to the J.C. Penney website. The surprise?  I was delighted with the result!

When I received the box at my doorstep a few days later, I opened the box with anticipation but also with a sense, that I probably would have to return it.  Not that I’m a fashion snob, by any means.  I enjoy a good bargain from T.J. Max,  Ross, or even Target as much as the next person but,  I have never ordered anything from J.C. Penney,  so I was more than a bit skeptical.   When I saw it on a model that was close in age who looked dynamite in this simple cap-sleeved solid black sequin skimmer with a scooped back, I took the plunge.  What did I have to lose?  I could always return it to the J.C. Penney store in Glenwood Springs, or mail it back.

When I opened the slim box, I discovered the dress looked as good as it did on TV, and fit like a dream!  I guessed right on the size….word of advice…always round up when you purchase a garment from a relatively unknown designer associated with a large chain store.  So I bought a size 6 rather than my usual 4.

Well, I wore it out last night for the first time to the Aspen Peak magazine party and I can’t tell you how many compliments I received, from our very fashion -savvy crowd.  I wore it with black opaque tights and a simple vintage black beaded pump with an all-so-new kitten heel.  I felt terrifc and very comfortable in a very uncontrived and classic look for what you usually pay for a tee-shirt.   When you are comfortable, you always look just right.

I plan on wearing my simple, but perfect little black, sparkly dress all season long, and hopefully beyond.  I’m a J.C.Penney convert, which serves to re-inforce the valuable lesson, that you can find fashion anywhere…in your local mall, as well as at your favorite upscale boutique…and it may even be a click away!  Kudos to Good Morning America, too,  for providing a happy little Christmas present to me!  Happy Holidays and, as always, happy shopping!

Take a look at the dress.

This weekend is the Olympics of fashion…

the semi-annual Fashion Week in New York…which now precedes even Milan and Paris, dictating the trends for next Spring.  As we are beginning to page through the September issues of Vogue, Bazaar, W, Elle and Marie Claire for ideas for our Fall wardrobe, the style trendsetters and designers are preparing us for next Spring in these high-profile extravaganzas starting today in the Big Apple!

On Tuesday night, CBS.com provided us with a ringside seat to the first-ever Fashion Week festivities in the plaza of Lincoln Center, blocks away from the traditional Bryant Park location, where hundreds of specatactors as well as thousands of on-line viewers witnessed the fabulous Anna Wintour inspired fashion show, kicking off this year’s weekend of style and shopping.  Tomorrow night will be the second annual Fashion’s Night Out, orchestrated by Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and the city of New York, to kick-start consumers out of their recession-induced shopping doldrums and into the stores.  Shops all over New York’s five boroughs stay open late on Friday to host shows, complete with designer appearances, entertainment, art and music.

Andre Leon Tally, Vogue’s editor-at-large, hosted the event at Lincoln Center, along with fellow blogger, Hanneli Mustaparta.  Together, they interviewed designers Vera Wang, Donna Karan, Diane Von Furstenberg and Michael Kors before the much anticipated event.  Music, lights, action!  An English-style double decker bus pulled up to Lincoln Center, and out paraded the world’s top super-models.  Giselle Bundchen led the girls, wearing variations of the coveted Fashion Night Out tee-shirts topping off sumptuous ball-skirts.  As they strutted through the crowd, 170 models grouped in the major styles for the season circled around the guests repeatedly, accompanied by the driving rhythms of singer Pharrell Williams.

The 50’s look, highlighted by Donna Reed style shirtwaist dresses, interpreted beautifully by Prada and Fendi, with models wearing beehive and French twist hairstyles, the rocker and James Dean biker looks with assymetrically zipped leather jackets, military double-breasted silhouettes, always done perfectly by Christopher Bailey at Burberry, jazz age vamp looks a la twenties, nomadic bohemian looks and the new re-visited color for Fall, camel, in classic reefer style chesterfields and trenchcoats all were represented in 470 looks.   Naomi Campbell escorted Williams back onto the bus along with the elite group of models, this time wearing couture gowns from the world’s top designers.

Even the world’s top tennis top players took a break to catch this show, with Roger Federer and wife attending this once-in-a-lifetime ace of a show, along with Serena Williams, sidelined this year from the U.S. Open by injuries, who took a moment to speak with Talley.  She loves the tweed business looks.  Does this mean she’ll be wearing herringbone form-fitting tennis togs at her next tournament?  Andre summed up the season by saying, “It’s a return to polish- sleek chic!”  Michael Kors called the show an explosion of style – style x a zillion!”

If you’re in New York tomorrow night, go shopping!  You can even shop on your Blackberry…go crazy!  From $10 to $10,000 the latest styles can be yours…locally, there will be events at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman-Marcus in Denver tomorrow night to coincide with the New York spectacle.  If you missed the event on-line on Tuesday, CBS will be airing an hour-long special about Friday’s event, next Tuesday, 14th,  at 8 pm.  Stay tuned…there’ll be more from yours truly over this exciting weekend.  Next year, this blogger wants to sit next to the glorious Mr. Talley.  And yes, Andre, I do know the difference between an A-line and and a circular skirt.  I grew up with Jackie Kennedy as my major fashionista who re-invented the A-line skirt…and how exquisitely she wore them.
